History of the Tom Threepersons Holster
A True Legend of the American West The “Threepersons” style holster is widely regarded as the granddaddy of modern combat and field holsters. Designed in the early 1920s by Cherokee lawman Tom Threepersons—a legendary U.S. Customs Inspector, Texas Ranger, and El Paso Police Officer—the design was born out of real-world gunfighting necessity on the Southwest border.
Frustrated by sluggish, full-coverage flap holsters of the 19th century, Threepersons worked with the famous S.D. Myres Saddle Company in El Paso, Texas, to create a faster, sleeker holster design. The key innovations included:
Exposed Trigger Guard & Hammer: Cut low around the trigger guard and hammer to allow a full, fast firing grip while the gun was still holstered.
Forward Cant (Rake): Angled forward on the belt line for a quicker draw stroke and comfortable hip carry.
Open Top with Safety Strap: Dispensed with heavy leather flaps in favor of a fast-releasing retention strap over the hammer.
Muzzle-Forward Cut: Tapered tight around the frame and barrel to cut down on unnecessary bulk and weight.
Decades later, the Tom Threepersons design remains one of the cleanest, most functional, and timeless holster styles ever created for double-action revolvers—a staple pattern every custom leather craftsman should offer in their catalog.
